what sort of social factors inspire graffiti?
Graffiti ,Graffiti is most similar in all ways a heredity discipline. it’s a habitual system. Like the fathers habits transfer to the son. A younger graffiti writer receives training and guidance from an older writer.
The older writer being by title… a friend, but by nature a tutor, a teacher.
the younger a modern disciple to the art. The teacher will emboss his own segments of personal stylization onto the student, and the student with time will create his own method of style and personality within his work individual to himself.
Why would anyone teach such a discipline?
Like most disciplines the art of graffiti is not taken lightly by the seriously involved. However like all disciplines, learning has its rewards. The rewards for vandalizing are strong and steady in coming. The people involved in graffiti, form psychological families, crews of acquaintances who all have mutual respect and friendships that go almost as deep as the art itself.
There is also a lot of education to be gained within the graffiti world. It may be unconventional but the powerful lessons are valuable. The kids that get into graffiti generally come from working class backgrounds where artistic expression isn’t encouraged, menial labor instead is motivated to be the future.
How to kids get into this ‘unconventional education’?
Most kids get into graffiti …at first…because they dream of respect and adoration. This is a picture painted around the art form in the school playground. The top graffiti artist at that time are well respected as the kids that are too cool to care .
However after a child has entered the realms of the graffiti posse he begins to learn the meaning of artistic expression, all the time unaware.
A well-expressed piece of art, and originality are respected above all else. Above money, cloths, jewelry. This is a solid stage of character development for a child to have, and once the child has the (in my opinion true) perception that his creativity is worth more than his grades in real life, neither you nor I can change him without a severe fight.
While the rest of the kids loose their value of expression and freedom of thought in the common schools. These kids are well on their way training their minds for everything else but a science exam. Every day analyzing targets. (The walls and plots) and every night hitting their targets. This creates an outstanding belief in their abilities, and also that it is a good thing not to oppress the urge for expression. (Which is why later in life graffiti artists can be perceived as eccentric and over the top … even intimidating ) For if they do they could be missing out on a portion of respect they have the right to receive (and believe they deserve).
Can you give us a few examples of positive attributes graffiti can install into a child?
Here’s A short list (by all means unfinished) of the out of curricular education a graffiti artist can expect to gain
.Social confidence, life kinship and friendship lessons
.Psychological confidence , self belief
.Expert Analytical skills. The graffiti artist learns to dissect a piece, and also the reliability of the person producing the piece
.Expert spatial awareness, the graffiti artist quickly dissects a surrounding around an area he wishes to paint.
.Artistic awareness and talent development, the lifelong value of expression is unmatched.
.Time management, an artist quickly understands how to divide his day into manageable sections so that painting fits in to a routine.
.The ability to think on feet, this is the ability to make quick decisions without procrastination
.An appreciation of good design and typography
.An appreciation of architecture and distilled beauty. it’s not all painting on .the rooftops and tunnels, these artists see the beauty of hidden architecture that most don’t see.
All in all graffiti is a discipline that enhances the integral value of lives. Although illegal. The graffiti artist socially has far more to gain. The graffiti artist see’s the world for what it is and not as he has been told formally, then creating upon this perception. It is the same artistic process that the ideology of flaneurism in 19th century france Was structured to represent, as-well as artistic movements that have come and gone throughout history.
Graffiti art is also the art of opening ones eyes to the reality of our surroundings, then once fully appreciated… expressing feelings gained by such a reality, this is so that others perception of the world surrounding us may also be heightened by trying to grasp the mysterious relevance within the art form.
Do you have any other opinions you want to share about graffiti?
I will tell you one of my favorite quotes from Leonardo da-vinci . I think it is relevant to the subject.
“It had long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to them. They went out and happened to things.” Leonardo da-vinci
